Summary

It's April 1988, a month before Kinsey Millhone's thirty-eighth birthday, and she's alone in her office catching up on paperwork when a young man arrives unannounced。 He has a preppy air about him and looks as if he'd be carded if he tried to buy a beer, but Michael Sutton is twenty-seven, an unemployed college dropout。 More than two decades ago, a four-year-old girl disappeared, and a recent newspaper story about her kidnapping has triggered a flood of memories。 Sutton now believes he stumbled on her lonely burial and could identify the killers if he saw them again。 He wants Kinsey's help in locating the grave and finding the men。 It's way more than a long shot, but he's persistent and willing to pay cash up front。 Reluctantly, Kinsey agrees to give him one day of her time。

But it isn't long before she discovers Sutton has an uneasy relationship with the truth。 In essence, he's the boy who cried wolf。 Is his story true, or simply one more in a long line of fabrications?

Moving between the 1980s and the 1960s, and changing points of view as Kinsey pursues witnesses whose accounts often clash, Grafton builds multiple subplots and memorable characters。 Gradually we see how everything connects in this thriller。 And as always, at the heart of her fiction is Kinsey Millhone, a sharp-tongued, observant loner who never forgets that under the thin veneer of civility is a roiling dark side to the soul

I liked the storyline as I usually do in this series。 However there were too many characters and I found myself flipping back to see who was who and what they had to do with the plot。

I will be sad when this series ends。 #1257

This was the first book by Sue Grafton that I have read。 Mostly the story was engaging, fast paced, and kept me reading。 I did have some trouble keeping track of the characters, but not enough to spoil the reading。 I will probably read more of her books。

Marianne

Enjoyable as the others。 Working my way slowly though finishing these up after a 15 year hiatus。 The break definitely helped me to like the characters again。 3。5 stars。

Read so well! A beaut。

I know it is genre fiction, but by now these are so solid and page turning stories, that they are fine examples of the genre done right。 only a few more left and will looking for a Grafton replacement if there is such a thing。

A little hard to follow due to switching dates often。

Making my way through the alphabet and still look forward to what is coming up next。 Hard as I try I can never predict how the case will be resolved。

First book in a long time I've given in to temptation, stopped doing the housework, and gotten on with the next chapter。 First book in a long time I've given in to temptation, stopped doing the housework, and gotten on with the next chapter。 。。。more

I haven’t read any of the author’s other alphabet novels。 I came across this title in the same mystery grab bag I got from a COVID Half Price Books deal (this grab bag also introduced me to the novel E, which I loved)。 All that to say that I don’t really know the character’s back story and wouldn’t have picked this novel up on my own。 There were a lot of references to things in her personal family life that I wasn’t familiar with as I assume they were carrying on the story line from previous boo I haven’t read any of the author’s other alphabet novels。 I came across this title in the same mystery grab bag I got from a COVID Half Price Books deal (this grab bag also introduced me to the novel E, which I loved)。 All that to say that I don’t really know the character’s back story and wouldn’t have picked this novel up on my own。 There were a lot of references to things in her personal family life that I wasn’t familiar with as I assume they were carrying on the story line from previous books (all of her alphabet novels involve the same private detective character Kinsey)。 Outside of that confusing (for me) story line, the main plot in the center of the novel was a good one。 I enjoyed it。 But not so much that I’ll go back and read the rest of the alphabet。 。。。more

This was not my favourite - I had a bit of a struggle with the changing timelines plus for all the storylines playing out, I felt like this was predictable。 I won’t spoil it for others and I will just proceed forward。 4 more to go。

Claudia

I enjoyed the book however did not like the way it ended。 Sue Grafton writes excellent mysteries。

I would give it 3 1/2 stars if I could。 This is a an enjoyable series。

First of her books that I encountered where she went back and forth between decades in her chapters。

Another great one in this series。 Loved it

Kinsey is visited by a young man who wants her to investigate a case of a missing four year old。 The child disappeared when the young man was six years old。 He claims that he remembers seeing two "pirates digging for gold" years ago。 Will Kinsey solve the case? I always love a mystery that takes a while to put together。 Not the best I've ever read, but fast-paced and thought-provoking enough to keep me interested until the end。 I always love a mystery that takes a while to put together。 Not the best I've ever read, but fast-paced and thought-provoking enough to keep me interested until the end。 。。。more

I was finally able to borrow this e-book from my library and the story didn't disappoint。 Over the years, I have enjoyed all these books by Sue Grafton。 This one was fast paced, and good。 I was finally able to borrow this e-book from my library and the story didn't disappoint。 Over the years, I have enjoyed all these books by Sue Grafton。 This one was fast paced, and good。 。。。more

Still love the character but wow there seemed to be a lot of loose ends in this one still waiting to be tied up。 I have a feeling I will continue to feel this way with the rest of the series。。。 Editors and author got lazy after the first five or so books?

3。5 Haven't read a Kinsey Millhone book in probably a decade, but I never felt like I missed a beat while reading U is for Undertow。 And that's exactly what I was hoping for when I selected it。 I don't recall Grafton using the multi-narrator format in her earlier alphabet books, but that was the only distinction I could point to。 Solid familiarity that was just what this reader ordered。 3。5 Haven't read a Kinsey Millhone book in probably a decade, but I never felt like I missed a beat while reading U is for Undertow。 And that's exactly what I was hoping for when I selected it。 I don't recall Grafton using the multi-narrator format in her earlier alphabet books, but that was the only distinction I could point to。 Solid familiarity that was just what this reader ordered。 。。。more

I really got drawn in towards the end but felt that it ended all rather abruptly and the epilogue was used to tidy it all up。 A brief visit to the retired policemen who I always enjoy, more family stuff and another cold case! I prefer these books coming from other people’s perspectives as well as Kinsey and I think the story takes off better that way。Just want to say that I get the impression that if Grafton researches something she feels inclined to put everything she finds in her books, I felt I really got drawn in towards the end but felt that it ended all rather abruptly and the epilogue was used to tidy it all up。 A brief visit to the retired policemen who I always enjoy, more family stuff and another cold case! I read the first half of this series 15-20 years ago, so it was a good nostalgia trip to revisit Kinsey Millhone。 Also, it's set in the 1980s, so also a trip to see a PI work pre-Internet。 I read the first half of this series 15-20 years ago, so it was a good nostalgia trip to revisit Kinsey Millhone。 Also, it's set in the 1980s, so also a trip to see a PI work pre-Internet。 。。。more

You just can’t go wrong with Sue Grafton。 She’s sorely missed。

I’m rereading my way through this alphabet series and in doing so with my older self, I appreciate the books within the series which have a more in-depth plot and full fledged characters。 This is one of them。 Enjoyed the ride!
